Sports Massage

Sports massage is a form of deep tissue massage involving the manipulation of various layers of soft tissue and lengthening of the muscles.

Sports massage will benefit any person engaged in regular physical activity. Various techniques are used to assist in correcting problems and imbalances in soft tissue that are caused from repetitive and strenuous physical activity and trauma. The application of sports massage, prior to and after exercise, can be used to enhance performance, aid recovery and prevent injury.

In addition to Sports Massage techniques your Sports Therapist may offer any one or combination of additional treatments if he thinks they will be beneficial to you.

Sports Taping

Sports Taping

Sports taping with Kinesiology tape is a technique that is designed to facilitate the body’s natural healing process while providing support and stability to muscles and joints without restricting the body’s range of motion.

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation

This technique is very popular in the USA where it is known as the Graston technique. In the UK it is commonly referred to as IASTM (Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation). Sports Therapists, Osteopaths, Chiropractors and Physiotherapists use this technique in addition to other types of manual therapy. Specially designed hand-held massage tools (usually made from smooth stainless steel) are used to apply pressure in small, careful motions. Typically this technique is used for myofascial release where these instruments can effectively work to break up areas of tension including scar tissue.

Therapeutic Ultrasound

Ultrasound therapy uses specialised equipment to warm up specifically targeted areas of tissue giving a deeply warming effect to aid recovery. Gel is used on the skin to reduce friction and aid transmission of ultrasonic waves which can help muscles, tendons and ligaments.

Myofascial Cupping

This technique uses a range of different sized plastic cups that are applied to the skin and then a vacuum is created using a small hand held device  that can be attached to each cup briefly. The amount of vacuum applied is carefully tailored so that the cups can be moved around the area. This has the effect of working on the connective tissues to dissipate any areas of tension and bringing blood flow to the area.
